SHUNKIN

by Stijn Celis

For his ballet ‘Shunkin ‘director Stijn Celis was inspired by the Japanese author Junichirō Tanizaki. The story is about a beautiful woman who, despite losing her sight during childhood, becomes an accomplished shamisen (Japanese harp) player. Her servant, Sasuke helps guide her through life both metaphorically and physically. However, this relationship of dependency develops into something more serious and sinister, eventually taking a tragic turn…

Laura Theiss, an emerging knitwear designer connects with the world of ballet to express her creative style. In ‘Shunkin’, she interweaves traditional Japanese dress with modern, digital design processes to create costumes which not only meet the extreme technical requirements of modern dance but represent beauty and fluidity.
