Man as Creator

E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic ‘The Sandman’ is one of the central works of ‘Black Romanticism’. It focuses on the dark side of humanity somewhere between The Enlightenment and Sigmund Freud. Hoffman’s story about the strange Dr Coppelius who creates a human-like doll was written just a few years before Mary Shelley’s famous novel Frankenstein. Both stories are about human primal fears and fantasies of omnipotence. A man’s rise to become the creator of a supposedly perfect being -from his own human prototype- which goes on to cause destruction. Inspired by Hoffmann, Stijn Celis creates a new piece entitled ‘Clara’. Richard Siegal’s 2014 ballet ‘Liedgut’ completes the evening.
